Safe & Affordable Housing

Safe and affordable housing is an urgent need in Clallam County. Those most impacted by this crisis are individuals and families who are either living in poverty or who are ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Restrained, Employed. ALICE households earn less than the cost of basic necessities but more than the Federal Poverty Line, meaning they are not typically eligible for public assistance. In Clallam and Jefferson Counties, those living in poverty or paycheck to paycheck include:

  • 70% of all children
  • 83% of all enrolled kindergarteners
  • 100% of all Native American children

United Way of Clallam County has made housing a priority because we understand the critical role it plays in preventing families from falling into a permanent cycle of poverty. We are thrilled to recognize the following organizations as leaders in the effort to create more safe and affordable housing for residents of Clallam County.

Strong & Secure Families

United Way of Clallam County recognizes how critical a strong foundation is to our community's families.

  • 80% of households in Clallam County headed by single moms are living below the poverty line or surviving paycheck to paycheck.
  • The number of Clallam County children living in households below or just above the poverty line are some of the highest in Washington State.

This is why we partner with non-profit organizations that support quality and affordable childcare, early childhood education, parental support, family resources, and more. The finalists in the Strong & Secure Families category have gone to extraordinary lengths to help our community's families access material and educational resources that can help them build a financially secure future for themselves and their children.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

As an agency that envisions a community where everyone is supported to become their best self, United Way of Clallam County is committed to working collaboratively with our board, partner agencies, and community members to disrupt and dismantle the systemic and institutional barriers to a fully equitable community. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) LIVE UNITED Award recognizes an individual, company, or organization that embodies these values in Clallam County.

NOMINEES:

The North Olympic Library System strives to offer equitable and accessible services to all community members and has prioritized this value in their strategic initiatives. They offer diverse programs, events, and classes, which promote learning, skills acquisition, intellectual and cultural stimulation, civic discourse, community vitality, social engagement, entertainment, relaxation, and creative fun. Through an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens, NOLS continues to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to review NOLS’ policies, practices, collections, programs, and resources.

They have also hired their first Vice President for Human Resources and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Her responsibilities include advancing the college’s mission and fostering a culture of inclusivity.

In 2023, the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce made a concerted effort to bring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to the Sequim business community. They hosted a series of trainings that offered participants an opportunity to explore each aspect of this work – diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging – and the positive impact they can have in businesses. The Chamber was so committed to bringing this information to their community, they ensured there was a very low barrier to participation.

Clallam United

This year the LIVE UNITED Clallam United Award recognizes exceptional volunteerism. Volunteers are of critical importance to all our community partners, but St. Vincent de Paul is one of only two that are entirely staffed by volunteers. The depth of this service is put into even starker relief when you consider the care and individualized approach St. Vincent de Paul volunteers take with each and every person or family they help. The organization's structure allows it to meet people where they are and assist in a direct and often financial way to the unique challenges each person is facing. They truly are building "a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need."

Campaign Volunteer

The LIVE UNITED Campaign Volunteer Award highlights someone who has dedicated exceptional time and effort to making our campaign a success. We could not think of a more worthy recipient than Lexie J. Winters Photography. Seen behind the camera at countless events, Lexie doesn't seek the limelight for herself. Her dedication, support, and generosity remind us that we have the opportunity to help to those in need by stepping forward to volunteer with United Way. By donating her time and skills as an event photographer, spending dozens of unseen hours behind the screen editing and uploading photos, Lexie allows United Way to raise even more funds that create IMPACT in the lives of people in our community. Lexie is a true professional, an incredibly talented photographer, and a true friend of United Way.

Outgoing Board Members

Each year, we honor our outgoing board members for their service and contributions to United Way of Clallam County. We are so sorry to lose these individuals, but we are incredibly grateful for the hundreds of hours they have spent helping to craft the future of our organization and guide us in our mission.
