Psychologists define resilience as adaptation in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, or significant sources of stress. For the last three years, during the month of October, United Way of Clallam County's Clallam Resilience Project has teamed up to work collaboratively with community partners to offer events and activities focused on building knowledge, skills, connection, and resilience. We invite you to attend our fourth annual Resilience Month events and activities, all of which are free and open to the public.

Keynote Speaker
Laura van Dernoot Lipsky | Founder & Director of the Trauma Stewardship Institute
Tuesday, October 3 | 10 - 11:30am | Zoom

Laura van Dernoot Lipsky is the founder and director of The Trauma Stewardship Institute and author of Trauma Stewardship and The Age of Overwhelm. She is the host of the podcast Future Tripping, which is dedicated to conversations about overwhelm. Widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of trauma exposure, she has worked nationally and internationally for more than three decades. Much of her work is being invited to assist in the aftermath of community catastrophes - whether they are fatal storms or mass shootings. Simultaneously, she has long been active in community organizing and movements for social and environmental justice and has taught on issues surrounding systematic oppression, structural supremacy, and liberation theory. Laura is on the advisory board of ZGiRLS, an organization that supports young girls in sports. She is a founding member of the International Transformational Resilience Network, which supports the development of capacity to address climate change. Laura also served as an associate producer of the award-winning film A Lot Like You, and was given a Yo! Mama award in recognition of her work as a community-activist mother.
This training and discussion will offer practical tools to help us sustain, individually and collectively, in the face of trauma, secondary trauma and overwhelm. Whether this is related to our work, our personal lives, the pandemic, democracies dissolving, systemic oppression and structural supremacy surfacing in exceedingly painful ways, or the unfolding of the climate crisis, we will discuss what the consequences are as well as strategies for sustaining ourselves and each other. This will be interactive so please come with questions or topics you'd like to cover. Laura asks that attendees leave their cameras on during the discussion, if possible.
Laura has asked that the following documents be made available to attendees of her talk. Please click on each link below to read and download the following:

Speaker
Ian Mackay | Founder & Executive Director of Ian's Ride
Thursday, October 12 | 12:35pm | The Little Theater at Peninsula College & Zoom

After a bicycle accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, Ian Mackay found solace and meaning in being able to get outside and explore the Olympic Discovery Trail from his wheelchair. After riding across Washington State from North to South, the attention and inspiration produced by this trip inspired him to advocate for outdoor accessibility and eventually to the founding of Ian's Ride, a 501(c)(3). The mission of Ian's Ride is to promote outdoor accessibility, further the availability of accessible technology, and encourage support services for those with mobility impairment. There are now six group rides throughout the year that people can participate in, including Ride the Foothills, Ride the Tahoma, Sea to Sound, and more. Ian hosts a video series on YouTube called "Good Moments with Ian Mackay," which can be viewed HERE.
