The seed of what would become Clallam Mosaic was planted in 1998, when four sets of parents gathered to consider what they would do when their children graduated from the special education programs offered by Sequim High School. With no prospects for higher education or jobs in the community, these parents launched a weekly "Rec Club," which continues to this day. In 2001, Clallam Mosaic began to receive funding from various sources including United Way of Clallam County and the Albert Haller Foundation.

Over the years, Clallam Mosaic offered classes and programs at various locations including Sequim Community School, the Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Angeles. By 2019, Clallam Mosaic was offering 12 - 18 hours of classes per week, in addition to summer and holiday classes. Current Board President Bonnie Smith spoke about the partnership between Clallam Mosaic and United Way of Clallam County:

“Our partnership with United Way provided us with the funding so that we could bring in folks who could do this programming, who could make a difference. Having United Way be our partner, providing us with the funding so that we could do those kinds of classes.”

Clallam Mosaic Finds a Permanent Home

In 2023, United Way of Clallam County announced that Clallam Mosaic would receive $50,000 with a promise of an additional $50,000 in 2024, to establish a permanent home for their clients and programs. Clallam Mosaic's new space is located on First Street in the heart of downtown Port Angeles. There is plenty of room for multiple programs to happen simultaneously, as well as room for storage and administrative offices. Clallam Mosaic Board President had this to say about the effect of the impact funding:

“The impact funding was just a gift beyond belief. We had looked at this building that we’re in about 10 years ago. There was no way. We were not ready. We could not do it. And through the impact grant from United Way we now have this incredible space and a downtown presence.”

Make a gift today and help provide a space for everyone in our community to feel safe.
